Trombone Performance & Instruction
A/V Recording Services
Alex is a multifaceted trombonist with a unique perspective that sets him apart from other music instructors. He recently earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from University of Southern California in 2023, where he has also completed his Masters degree in Trombone Performance. Prior to moving to LA in 2017, Alex studied at Oberlin Conservatory for his Bachelor’s degree in Trombone Performance.
By taking the time to get to know each of his students as individuals, Alex uses a student-centered approach to find their unique self-driven motivation. By establishing an environment where students feel welcomed and accepted, Alex challenges his students to the limits of their musical abilities on any given day. Individualized lesson plans are designed for each student to emphasize fundamentals of creating a beautiful sound, while leaving room for students to have their own agency in musical decision-making. He hopes to leave his students with a greater sense of self-efficacy, a mirrored passion for the performing arts, and a sense of joy from music-making that extends into all areas of their lives.
Alex has experience instructing all stages of learning trombone, ranging from his students' very first notes all the way to preparing for college and orchestral auditions. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Cypress College, where he teaches applied private lessons for trombone students. In addition to his role at Cypress, Alex is a Teaching Artist at the Hollywood site for Harmony Project, where he teaches Intro, Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Low Brass group classes.
As a freelance trombonist, Alex is an active performer in a wide variety of musical styles varying from orchestral to commercial. He has performed with numerous orchestras around Los Angeles including Downey Symphony, Peninsula Symphony, LA Jewish Symphony, and California Young Artists Symphony. He has also performed at the Greek Theater and Peacock Theater with Iranian artist MOEIN. Additionally, Alex has performed with Southern California Brass Consortium, Cali Brass, and he has played in several productions with Torrance Theater Company. In addition to his work as a performer and music educator, Alex also has an extensive background as an audio technician and is currently working as a contracted concert recording engineer for USC.
